Do's and don'ts in Microbiology Laboratory

  • Do's in Microbiology Laboratory.


  • Wash your hands with disinfectant sope when you arrive at the lab and again before you leave.
  • Purchase a lab coat and safety glasses, bring them to class, and use them.
  • Keep your workspace free of all unnecessary materials. Backpacks, purses should be placed in the cubbyhole by the front door of the lab.
  • Disinfect work areas before and after use. Use a disinfectant, such as 10% bleach or 70% ethanol solution, to wipe down benches and work areas both before and after working with culture.
  • Lable everything cleary. All cultures, chemicals, disinfectant and media should be clearly labelled with their names and dates.
  • Inoculation loop and needles should be flame sterilized in a Bunsen burner before you lay them down.
  • Turn off Bunsen burner when not in use.(long hair must be restrained if Bunsen burner are in use)
  • Treat all microorganisms as potential pathogens.(A student when has a compromised immune system or has had a recent extended illness should talk with the instructor before working in the microbiology laboratory)
  • Wear disposable gloves when working with potentially infectious microbes or sample (Eg. Sewage)
  • Report spills and accidents immediately to your instructor. Report all injuries or accidents immediately to the instructor, no matter how small they seem.
  • Display instructions in different areas and they should be followed strictly.

  • Don'ts in Microbiology Laboratory.

  • Never pipette by mouth, use pipette bulbs or pipetting device for the asperation and dispensing of liquid culture.
  • Don't eat or drink in the lab, don't store food in areas where microorganisms as stored. Never eat or drink in the lab while working with microorganisms.
  • Don't open petri dishes in the lab unnecessarily.
  • Don't take cultures out of the lab.
  • Don't place culture at the edge of the desk.
  • Think an organism isn't dangerous judging by the name.
  • Don't touch your face with dirty gloves.
  • Don't rush to finish the experiment.
  • Avoid coughing, sneezing and yawning in the testing area.
